Kaspersky Lab with B2B International conducted a survey and the results showed that 74 per cent of corporate sector respondents reported that DDoS attacks against their companies came in parallel with other IT security incidents. Attackers use such approach to distract IT personnel from real threats such as injecting malware or virus to steal money, data or intellectual property, this approach is referred to as “DDoS smokescreening”.
22 percent of respondents in the survey considered hacking as the number 1 threat while 21 percent considered malware to be the number 1 threat. However, 6 percent see DDoS as the most dangerous threat. Meanwhile, 45% of DDoS attacks came along with malware incidents, and 32% with corporate network intrusions. In addition, there is 26% of attacks detected together with data leaks. The type of companies that suffered most from these attacks are construction and engineering companies, having 89 per cent of DDoS attacks occurring with other types of attacks.
DDoS attacks stay a serious issue that affects companies in an increasing manner causing 24 percent of companies to have their services completely unavailable, 39 percent of these companies are governmental. 34 percent had transaction failure due to DDoS attacks (mainly transport companies with 64 percent). On 2014, the figures were lower than this year with 13 percent of companies had their services completely unavailable due to DDoS attacks, while 29 percent had failure in transactions as a result of such attacks.
Longer page loading times is considered one of the common issues resulting from DDoS attacks with 53 percent on 2015 and 52 percent on 2014. However, these attacks can last for days or even weeks.
